Three Forgiveness Myths

This is from a free online chapter from the book “Mad Church Disease”.

Forgiveness Myth #1: You Can Forgive and Forget
Many people think the phrase “forgive and forget” is an ancient proverb,
rich with wisdom. Actually, it comes from Shakespeare’s King Lear: “Pray
you now, forget and forgive.”

The point is that you may never forget, but you can forgive.

Myth #2: You can’t forgive without hearing “I’m Sorry”

Forgiveness is something you decided to do whether or not the other apologizes or even can. Sometimes we need to forgive the dead or those we can’t or may not see again.

Myth #3: Forgiveness is a feeling

Forgiveness is a state of being, sometimes an incredible accomplishment. All those who learn to forgive do so using agency.
