Links and Notes for April 5

Peter Berger notes the death of one of the Death of God theologians.

The text to the song “I Serve a Risen Savior” or “He Lives“. Interesting note on the wikipedia article how some conservative Christians have protested the hymn. From the book “Wonderful Words of Life

In the book “Wonderful Words of Life: Hymns in American Protestant history and theology” Susan Wise Bauer notes that her first Easter at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia she suggested this song to the campus music director his response surprised her.

“I certainly hope that’s not the basis of your faith. That’s not how you know Christ is risen! We have the testimony of the eyewitnesses! We have the account in Scripture! We have the changed behavior of the disciples! To say that you just know he lives within your heart is to appeal to experience. That can led you to straight to liberal heresy!” (p. 205)

This piece by David Brooks about a man who wrote heroically about caring for his wife with Alzheimer’s and now 5 months later takes her life and his own should be read. There is much to ponder in this piece. Tim Stafford’s take on caring for his father with Alzheimer’s.

A piece on the appeal to Josephus to dispel the notion that Jesus’ existence and crucifixion was a mere legend.
