The title of the podcast was “Does God Intervene in Sports?”
First topic for discussion was on athletes who thank Jesus for their victories. Does God care or control who wins the Superbowl? (Note prior links from the Olympics on this subject.)
The podcast discussion concluded helpfully I thought that if athletes decide to publicly invoke God or Jesus they do so more consistently, especially in defeat as well as victory. Thanking God in all things…
The second story they picked up was about a woman in Texas who wrote a blog post entitled “Why I Raise My Children Without God” . The woman also has a blog named Kids Without Religion.
Her main points are as follows:
- God is a bad parent and role model
- God is not logical
- God is not fair
- God does not protect the innocent
- God is not present
- God does not teach children to be good
- God teaches narcissism
Lots of interesting comments in this thread. Here is one:
When I was in the 3rd or 4th grade, we studied in history the Greeks and their belief in the “gods”. After a few weeks of thinking, I asked my mother, what the difference was between people believing in god and the greeks believing in their gods. My mother didn’t have an answer that made any sense to me. I went to church and I listened to their bible stories and to me they sound a lot like what the greeks taught their people about their gods. I came to realize there was no difference. As I have grown up and grown older, I am so glad that I have not allowed myself to be misguided by religion.
As I read the responses from the good christians I am so glad I am an athiest!! If believing in god means that you must be hateful, I’m glad I missed that bus. I will continue to teach my children that they should be good people, because that is the right thing to do. I will continue to teach them that they have control over their thinking, their future and their destiny if they do the next right thing. I refuse to live my life in fear of my death and I will teach my boys the same. Hopefully within a few hundred years this will be the norm. By DTarr
The third discussion was about Chic-fil-a owner Dan Cathy and his relationship with Shane Windmeyer. Windmeyer wrote about it on the Huffington Post. Lovely piece.
