This story makes me extremely sad. I find the individualism expressed in her article tragic. The question I have to ask is what is sex for? I cannot help but think of Wendell Berry’s “Sex, Economy, Freedom, and Community” when I read this – I think he basically says sex a gift to each other, ultimately for the strengthening and stability of that couple, not of that couples own end or each individuals, but for the sake of the community. Not to mention that it is often literally a community building activity even when “safe” ( I find it interesting that this article could ever be written without the mention of children as a result of said sex. I presume that the woman who is Inspired to break her vow thanks to the good advice of the author who also gets pregnant might later write a less popular article that suggests the opposite of this authors conclusion.) I also think of the answer to that question in terms of glory . . . thanks to today’s sermon. If sex is ever glorious, I have to believe it must be done in love and unselfishness. All the words this woman uses make me feel like whatever kind of sex she is talking about/proposing/etc. is no different or sacred than a one night stand in that it robs the gift of sex of its glory – by taking the gift given to a couple in order to grasp the glory for oneself. I guess this woman believes in freedom (from) in the American/western sense as opposed to freedom to be bound (God delivers is! Let’s give ourselves back to God in gratitude!). I feel very fortunate for hearing the story of God told today in bible study and church. I wish this woman would have heard that story told. Thanks pastor!
