Abraham Kuyper: Modern Calvinist, Christian Democrat

“Modernist theology reflected real faith amid the pallid offerings of compromised Christianity, and did so all the more persuasively for promising to meet the scientific temper of the age; yet its proposals finally amounted to human self-projection within a naturalistic frame. It failed the tests of its truth-claims by calling real what its language treated as metaphor. Even more, it disappointed the yearnings of true piety. It was bound to evaporate in the mists of time, but not before damaging many of the faithful and feeding the company of scoffers.”

I read the book. It was very illuminating. It explained a lot about our own, that is, CRC history. To be honest I have issues with Kuyper’s political ideas concerning Christianity and government. But, to be fair, in its day, his political ideas were revolutionary in contrast to what had been going on with the Church, government and politics in Europe up until that time. I see many dangers for trying to apply his political principles in the world today. Yet I appreciate the insight the book gave on CRC history and the man who basically created it back in the Nederlands. It answered a lot of questions for me.
