Patheos

The new show, which is tentatively set to debut on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN later this fall, features the pastor and author doing what he does best: connecting with and communicating to audiences who consider themselves spiritual but are burned out on religion.

Luhrmann, Sleep and Dreams

NYTimes

WHEN Doug Hollan arrived on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi for his anthropology dissertation fieldwork in a rice farming village, his Toraja neighbors wanted to take turns sleeping with him and his wife.

The rural Toraja almost never sleep alone. They sleep in wood frame houses with little furniture and flimsy room dividers, and they sleep on the floor together in groups, sharing blankets and huddling close for warmth. And so the Toraja have “punctuated” sleep. They wake often as others turn and get up in the night, or when a child calls out or another adult can’t sleep and starts to chat. Mr. Hollan never heard anyone complain about this.

What have we lost with our dismissal of what the writer George Sturt called the “quiet depths of darkness”? In traditional non-Western societies like the Toraja, what happens at night really matters. People pay close attention to their dreams, and because they are awakened more often, they have more opportunity to remember them. When the anthropologist Eduardo Kohn arrived in a small village deep in the Amazon, people slept largely outdoors in an open thatch house, surrounded by other people. They would wake at night to drink tea, because it was cold, or because of the calls of animals. “Thanks to these continuous disruptions,” he writes, “dreams spill into wakefulness and wakefulness into dreams in a way that entangles them both.”

Christian Publishing Tussles over Brand and Message Issues

Guess The Banner isn’t alone in having to figure out brand, voice and the boundaries of its message.

CT

A leading Christian book publisher has resigned its membership in the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) after a dispute over God and the Gay Christian, a new book published by an affiliated imprint.

In a letter to board members, NRB president and CEO Jerry Johnson said that employees of WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group, the evangelical division of Penguin Random House, worked on the book. The book, which argues that same-gender sex is not sinful, was published by Convergent Books, a 16-month-old Penguin Random House line that describes itself as “publishing books for progressive and mainline Christians who demand an open, inclusive, and culturally engaged exploration of faith.”

The Insecure Grasp of Justin Bieber and the Need to be Rich to God

Four Major Stories This Week

  • Ukrainian Conflict with Russia
  • China’s conflict with Vietnam over drilling rights
  • Abduction of school girls in Nigeria
  • Antarctic Ice Shelf is irreparably melting

All four stories could be understood as violations of the command “You shall not steal”.

  • Ukrainians are claiming Russia is stealing their country
  • Vietnam is claiming China is stealing their oil
  • Boko Haram is stealing these children from their families, their faith and their future
  • Present pollution is stealing environmental health from future generations

But the big story is…

Justin Bieber is accused of robbery.

Justin drew a crowd and when he saw a woman reach for her cell phone he assumed she was taking pictures of him. She accuses him of reaching into her bag to grab her cell phone to delete the pictures only to find it locked. He pressured her to unlock it and she did so to demonstrate she had not taken any pictures. She claims he proceeded to say unkind things about her to her 13 year old daughter who was with her. According to other reports there were plenty of other people around by that point.

Justin defended himself on Twitter

“It is hard to defend myself and my privacy every moment of the day,” “Then to see rumors. The truth will set u free.”

My mom raised me to be kind to others. I get judged, harassed, and I try to take the high road. Sometimes it isn’t easy. But we keep trying

I will continue to be the man my mother raised. I love people and I will try to be kind even when things are not fair. Don’t believe rumors

LA police have not commented nor as of yet charged him with a crime.
