Lucy Peppiatt on Paul and Headship in Ephesians

Talking Heads ht Jesus Creed

When Paul describes a Christian husband as the ‘head’ of his wife, in the same way that Christ is the ‘head’ of the church, I think he is attempting a number of things.

  1. In a culture where wives were often regarded as both chattels and easily expendable, he wishes to redefine a husband’s understanding of his responsibilities towards his wife in the following way: a Christian husband is fully committed for life, sexually faithful, monogamous, self-sacrificial, and endlessly loving.

  2. In a culture where women and girls were largely uneducated or invested in in any way, and where men would have held all the power and education, he wishes to give Christian husbands the task of building up their wives into spiritual maturity, nourishing and nurturing them as ones who are equal heirs of the riches of grace poured out on them by Christ.

  3. The best concept to use when attempting to find an idea that applies both to Christ and the church and to husbands and wives (which I think is also transferable to the God/Christ and Christ/husband pairings) is the idea of the ‘cornerstone’ or ‘foundation’ upon which a structure is built up, and through which all things hold together.

Donald Trump and our Faith in Shame

Vox HT Douthat

Trump’s other gift — the one that gets less attention but is perhaps more important — is his complete lack of shame. It’s easy to underestimate how important shame is in American politics. But shame is our most powerful restraint on politicians who would find success through demagoguery. Most people feel shame when they’re exposed as liars, when they’re seen as uninformed, when their behavior is thought cruel, when respected figures in their party condemn their actions, when experts dismiss their proposals, when they are mocked and booed and protested.

Trump doesn’t. He has the reality television star’s ability to operate entirely without shame, and that permits him to operate entirely without restraint. It is the single scariest facet of his personality. It is the one that allows him to go where others won’t, to say what others can’t, to do what others wouldn’t.

Book about George Washington’s slaves gets yanked

World News

on yeah, and Jefferson’s slave holdings

How do you talk about George Washington’s slave? What’s more, how do you illustrate it?!!!
To me this story illuminates the civil religion box we are in. We aren’t limited to Voldemort in terms of what must not be named.
We hear tales of rigid oppressive religious dogma that closes out the sun and shuts our mouths, but in a world without the Christian God there is little that can challenge the law and the justice it requires.
What makes Christianity thrive is how strong grace meets strong justice.
The most shocking think about American slavery is how it produced the black church and how it is the black church that has brought forth to this day the racial demographic most reliably identifiable as Christian. Is the incarceration rates of Blacks a coincidence in the ongoing presence of the church? How often don’t I meet pastors with prison records?
In the incarnation God brings glory into the darkest places. On Good Friday darkness fell upon Jerusalem. The Roman cross becomes the Christian cross when the darkness of the tomb is broken. pvk
