Links from May 2012 on the Same Sex Marriage Debate

This is obviously not a complete list, but some things that I’ve read or written that I’ll want to keep a record of. I’ll keep adding to it as I come across things. This won’t obviously be an exhaustive list. I hope it will be a list that represents multiple sides. Feel free to add to it in the comments.

Posts by me: What is Marriage for? , why “Anything you want” doesn’t work, and one on romantic idolatries.

From conservative Reformed persons Michael Horton and Kevin De Young.

A youtube piece from a young gay man on his take.

A very interesting piece from the American Conservative on why the right can’t win.

Rachel Held Evans “How to win a culture war and lose a generation.”

One not directly on it but I think pertinent to how Christians feel in this debate. Will Willimon on no longer expecting the nation to prop up the church.

From Patrol “You Can’t Win the Public on Homosexuality”

Tim Keller on Homosexuality.

Statistics on Same sex legal partnerships/marriages mostly from Europe. Percentages who actually wish to register are far lower than heteros (even given percentage of population) and divorce rates are higher, especially lesbian couples.

NT Wright on the Debate in the Church about Homosexuality.

The Libertarian Case Against Gay Marriage by Justin Raimondo. This is a gay man. This quote is interesting.

“The modern gay-rights movement is all about securing the symbols of societal acceptance. It is a defensive strategy, one that attempts to define homosexuals as an officially sanctioned victim group afflicted with an inherent disability, a disadvantage that must be compensated for legislatively. But if “gay pride” means anything, it means not wanting, needing, or seeking any sort of acceptance but self-acceptance. Marriage is a social institution designed by heterosexuals for heterosexuals: why should gay people settle for their cast-off hand-me-downs?”

Here’s a Christian arguing for a definition of marriage “one man and one woman” in terms of natural law or the essence of marriage. He also links to a longer paper by an Ivy League trio. I’ll note again here that this is trying to answer the question “what does the word marriage mean” rather than my question “what is marriage for?”

From 2005, the first trio marriage in the Netherlands. Only the state does marriage in the Netherlands, the churches may hold “an affirmation of marriage” but it has no legal consequence. In the Roman Catholic church there the church only considers the marriage “complete” after their ceremony.

Blog post written by an African American PCA pastor on whether conservative Christian African Americans should not vote for Obama because of his SSM statement.

Kevin DeYoung weighs in again on “What the Bible Really Still Says About Homosexuality”

Daniel Helminiak CNN Belief Blog “My Take: What the Bible really says about homosexuality”

Last Chance for a win-win on Same Sex Marriage Basically says that the state should do “civil unions” for any and all and leave the “marriage” word alone.
