Where can Culture Making Power be found in the CRC today or are others simply folding our paper for us?

Here’s a recent posting from the Executive Director.

Did anyone read it?

I made a link to track what the ED posts. http://www.thebanner.org/bio/steven-timmermans

I’m not criticizing the ED (I obviously had a hand in selecting him and I think we got the right person for the job). I just wonder about our tools, our community, our ability to operate as a group?

“burn the wooden shoes” was a meme before we had the word.

Whatever we thought then or think now of Kuyvenhoven’s time in The Banner he helped the church talk about itself.

What I read on Voices impacts me.

When Rod writes about his life, his mom, his church, his faith in the midst of everyday Tucson life it moves me and it moves others. Maybe it is so because I know him, he’s my friend, and I care about him but I don’t think so. I remember printing something for my wife that he wrote and she said “I’d read voices if it all read like this.”

When I read Snapper’s missives on retirement church visiting. There’s stuff there. Maybe again that’s because although we’ve never met face to face David and I have conversed via this media for years now. I suspect, however, it’s more than that.

If I say “Cabbages and Kings” that has meaning to many of you.

Culture is Like Folding Paper

A friend of mine told me of an analogy of culture. You take a piece of paper and you fold it. Once it’s folded a certain way it always wants to fold that way again. That’s culture.

The CRC was able to make its own culture. As a community we folded certain ways and those folds, for better or for worse, reverberated through our churches. That is leadership. that is culture. The Banner was a vital element of that culture making. I don’t know that it is anymore.

Where can that culture making power be found today in the CRC today or are others outside of it simply folding the paper for us?
