Roger Olson “whatever happened to Evangelicalism”

https://www.patheos.com/blogs/rogereolson/2019/02/what-has-happened-to-the-evangelical-christianity-of-not-long-ago/

This man said something to me that I thought only I thought: “The Christianity of my youth is gone; I don’t find it anywhere.” I have thought that to myself but been afraid to say it to anyone. I had to agree with him. We both grew up in and began our ministries within the “heart” of American conservative Protestant, evangelical Christianity.

  • church as extended family
  • home visitation
  • evangelism and missions
  • respect for the worship space
  • work of the laity not professionals and church discipline
  • Sunday was a special day
  • personal accountability
  • revivals: protracted meetings
  • vacation times were busy times at church
  • Wednesday Bible Study
  • social fellowship
  • high standards of entertainment
  • sermons convict people of sin
  • intensity
