Wonder even in Suffering, A Christmas Meditation
Christmas must be a strange season for atheists. It’s always this time of year that they choose to spend their money with their massive billboard campaign. These billboards don’t come cheap and I would guess the competition this time of year for that space is high. I imagine they dig deep this time of year because they imagine folks who don’t attend church much darken the door and fall under the spell of preachers like me.
Doubts about the Character of the God of the Bible
It would seem to me that the happy atheist campaign is considerably less effective than going negative on Christianity. This tact I think has gotten a great deal more traction of late.
The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.” –Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion
“Jesus is Santa Claus for Adults” –Christopher Hitchens, God Is NotGreat
Allan Bevere on Jesus Creed makes this observation about this tactic: Continue reading
Would Someone Just Shut That Pope Up
We’re OK with him talking about sex, but not money.
The division of the fullness of Catholic thought in America has rendered it largely tractable in a nation that was always suspicious of Catholics. Lockean America tamed Catholicism not by oppression (as Locke thought would be necessary), but by dividing and conquering—permitting and even encouraging promotion of its sexual teachings, albeit shorn of its broader social teachings. This co-opted the full power of those teachings, directing the energy of social conservatives exclusively into the sexual-culture wars while leaving largely untouched a rapacious economy that daily creates few winners and more losers while supporting a culture of sexual license and “throw-away” children. Without minimizing the seriousness with which we need to take issues like abortion, gay marriage, and religious liberty, these are discrete aspects of an overarching “globalization of indifference” described by Francis. However, we have been trained to treat them as a set of autonomous political issues that can be solved by one or two appointments on the Supreme Court. Francis—like JPII and BXVI before him—has upset the “arrangement.” Rush and the gang are not about to go down without a fight. If only they could get that damn Marxist to talk about sex.

Portrait of a Minister’s Pain
Found this on an Atheist blog. Powerfully moving, very real, very true, very common. Worth reading.
God getting human on us
Jesus Creed. Why the challenge of Dawkins and Hitchens is both bracing and simplistic. The God who comes down into our mess.
In other words, Dawkins and Hitchens offer a simplistic view of God and a simplistic view of Scripture. In their thinking, if God is a perfect and holy being, then God must remain above the human fray and make things right without soiling himself in human affairs; and if he does muddy himself in the mire of the human, it’s proof he is no better than his dysfunctional creatures. Indeed, a perfect God would not allow such imperfections in the first place.

Good King Wenceslas
I’ve heard the carol of course, but never read the text or understood the ballad. I’m amazed at how blind I can be to the beauty around me. From Rod Dreher on Christmas Carols
Good King Wenceslas is about a king helping a poor man in the cold. Continue reading
