Why CS Lewis Never Goes out of Style

The Atlantic

As Henry L. Carrigan, Jr. puts it in Publishers Weekly, “While Huxley is now largely forgotten and Kennedy remains a symbol of lost promise, Lewis lives on through his novels, stories, essays, and autobiographical works.” While I think that oversimplifies Kennedy and underestimates Huxley, the underlying point is worth considering: In one of the great ironies of history, Lewis at his death received less attention than Huxley, and far less than Kennedy. But it may be true that Lewis’s ideas claim the most lasting influence, both on the Christian tradition and on the Western culture beyond.

Visiting High Schools

CK McClatchy High School Sacramento CA

Shadow Day

I’ve been visiting high schools with my youngest son who will be moving up from Middle School next year. Here in Sacramento you have a choice of what High School you’d like to attend and they have different specialties and programs in order to compete for the best students.

I spent today visiting two history classes, a poetry recitation competition, a Latin class who was translating Virgil, an engineering class and a robotics class.

What A Wonderful World We Live In

I was impressed by how many worth while things there are in this world, things that you can easily spend a lifetime pursuing. My son is 13 and I’m 50. I was excited about talking about the civil war, about designing robots and working on the machines to build them. I wanted to start to learn Latin so that I could read Virgil in the original language and talk about it with a small group of eager young learners.

I know how mundane High School can be. I hear about it all the time from my children who are in High School. I’m also impressed by the blessed opportunity my children have to learn and to live and to contribute in this amazing world.

God’s Own Fool

I’ve know a lot of pastors. I’ve seen them happy and sad, fresh and broken. I’ve seen a good number of them towards the end of their ministries quietly happy to be done with leading churches and caring for people. I remember one pastor telling me how he made sure he son didn’t go into the ministry. He didn’t want him making THAT mistake. I was glad I wasn’t his son.

Platforms and Publishing

Jesus Creed

This is an interesting topic, one that has grown out of the Driscoll-plagiarism conversation.

The Internet has disrupted traditional channels

Music, videos, newspapers, magazines, journals, etc. Information now passes with so much less control and cost. Gatekeepers must pivot. Gatekeepers are not always bad things.

The Transition is not over

Books will survive. How will they be used? A lot of good ideas can be gleaned more cheaply and efficiently from briefer formats, some cannot.

“Good” is in the eye of the beholder often

This is an old problem of course. Fluff in publishing fueled by mass popularity predates the Internet.

Time Changes Things

Those seen as important today may not be who is seen as important from today 40 or 100 years from now. This too predates the Internet.
