Suffering Evil? Pray

2012-08-05 12.32.01-1This is James 5:13a. It’s a tiny stub of a verse but it is powerful.

The Greek word here is “kakopatheo” is a merged-word for “evil” and “suffer”.

Are you suffering from circumstances that are evil or bad or wrong? James’ advice is to pray.

Circumstance

We are by nature junkies to circumstance. We are happy then things are going as we want them to, we are unhappy when they are not.

While we understand this about ourselves, we also esteem those who while they suffer tragedy, misfortune and evil transcend, overcome, and are not made bitter, vengeful or evil by their sufferings. We see this, esteem this, want this for ourselves, but surely don’t want the necessary suffering that produces this quality. (For more on this see my sermon from a couple of weeks ago.)

James’ answer to this might seem offensive and dismissive, but it is simple, pray.

Audio Tribute to CS Lewis

At the 50th anniversary of his death Regent Bookstore is giving away 8 lecture recordings about CS Lewis.  I’m working my way through them.

Alan Jacob’s Narnia’s Past and Future

Just finished listening to this one. Lovely lecture. Jacobs is the author of the book “The Narnian”  which I thoroughly enjoyed. Amid so much Lewis material that has become hagiography The Narnian doesn’t shrink from revealing the suggestive evidence of some of Lewis’ reality, his relationship with Mrs. Moore and the subject of his sexual life. You cannot understand the shape of the gospel without also understanding our condition.

He concludes this delightful lecture by reading the story of Kenneth Tynan from the Afterward from his book. This reading alone is worth the lecture.

A Smartphone Beginner’s Review of the Verizon Droid Maxx

IMG_20131123_151632 How to Pick a Smartphone

When  people ask me for advice on a smartphone I tell them that their first choice is actually an ecosystem. If you’re into Apple stuff (Mac, IPad, etc.)  get an IPhone. If you use Google stuff (Gmail, Chrome) go Android. If you use Microsoft online services (Bing, Outlook, Hotmail) consider Windows Phone. While a lot of things work cross platform (Google is most cross-platform friendly) the services are most refined for their own products.

Using Google Music

I was a long time Zune user but Zune is mostly dead. I’m also all Googled-up so trying Google Music was a no-brainer. I’ve been using their subscription service since the first month and their other “locker” service for longer. Here are some thoughts. Continue reading →
