1 Response to 10 Reasons Why Even Committed Christians Attend Less

  1. One reason not given: worship is poorly done. If worship services are focused on providing entertainment, excitement, and an “meaningful experience,” one of two things happen. 1. Churches do it poorly and don’t live up to even wrong expectations. 2. Since the worship service is focused on me, I can easily choose not to be there– I don’t want to this week.
Nick Wolterstorff in his recent book on worship quoted the old prayer that praising God is “our bounden and joyful duty.” In the same sense, the public worship of God is a duty we have to God and to each other as community. Duties are more than mere obligations, they are habits that form us and elucidate our priorities and commitments. Dutiful worship is the primary way by which God is central in our lives. We are grounded in the biblical story each week, and we praise the God from whom all blessings flow.
