Race Relations and LGBT

RNS

We now recognize how important it should have been for the movement to understand how racism intersected with sexism and heterosexism. Although women were essential to the success of “the movement,” they too often were viewed as “assistants and helpers” rather than as leaders. And although the Rev. Martin Luther King resisted the efforts of some of his colleagues to dismiss Bayard Rustin, the brilliant organizer and justice thinker who was gay, they did not view heterosexism as an “ism” to be confronted.

Desmoines Register on RCA SSM Clash

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/opinion/columnists/iowa-view/2016/05/30/reformed-church-faces-defining-moment-gay-issues/85007688/

With more than a decade of hindsight, we look back with pride on the costly choice we made to become an LGBT-affirming church. We lost some members and congregations, but defining ourselves positively to the LGBT community created new opportunities for ministry with people whose lives give glory to God. However we chose to move forward, there was also a cost to avoiding the decision. Each moment we spent attempting to persuade each other through internal processes was a moment not spent in pursuit of our outward mission. Indecision was prudent for a time, but we couldn’t expect it to save us.

Today we stand in the company of numerous communions in the Church Universal who bless homosexual people and benefit from their ministry. The growing body of Christians who have widened what it means to love in holy ways and offer one’s life in Gospel service make a beautiful testimony to church unity that transcends denominationalism. We pray that the RCA won’t delay any further. Come and stand with us.

The Burdensome Religion of EverydayFeminism.com

Everydayfeminism.com is unbelievable. I couldn’t curate a collection of ideas that better illustrate the new religion, and how impossible it is in its legalisms and thought crimes. Conservative religious people should be pretty familiar with legalism, moralism and thought crimes combined with self-doubt and the scrutiny of others. Just a brief perusal of this sight yields a flurry of features that if I took seriously would bind me into a world of self-righteous self-doubt that I’d be crying for “organized religion” in a New York minute.

and it just goes on and on.
This makes Jesus on the Sermon on the Mount who illuminated mental sins (hating vs. killing, lusting vs. adultery, etc.) seem like “my yoke is easy and my burden light” pvk

Atheists Rally to Create Visibility and Identity

RNS

Diva Eytcheson, 50, is less sure. As with Kuchynka, this will be her first Reason Rally. Her atheism is important in the voting booth, she said, but other identities she claims — abortion rights advocate, feminist — are equally and sometimes more important, she said.

“I vote more on social causes and hindering the pork in politics than I do on atheism alone,” said Eytcheson, who is traveling from Denver to attend the Reason Rally. “Every issue has its complexities and there is no such thing as black and white.”

“As long as we continue to get letters from high school students kicked out of their houses because they don’t share their parents’ religion, or from parents denied the opportunity to see their children because they don’t believe in God, we have to fight,” she said. “If the steps stand for something, it is that dream of inclusivity and equality, and that is what we want — to be seen and recognized and viewed as equals.”
