Same Sex Marriage and the Jesus Juke

RHE

Well, it’s quite handy actually. It’s a wormhole that can be opened and jumped through when one is faced with a contentious and complicated issue. The Juker says, for instance, that since Jesus didn’t talk about gays, I don’t need to either! He says that since Jesus talked mostly about poverty, justice for LGBTs is a big distraction, a nuisance, a we’ll-get-to-it-when-we-get-to-it sort of thing. Pushed to the end of his patience rope, the Jesus Juker will inevitably say something like this: Jesus is our unifier. His is our center, so please, for Pete’s sake, DROP IT!

But for me, I can’t. It’s my life and this is our friendship. You are my pastor, you are my teacher, you’re my favorite author, you’re a highly visible voice with influence. You are someone I want to trust. If you can’t trust me enough, love me enough, to be transparent over a rather large part of my journey, then how am I to still trust you?

All I am asking is that you stop sidestepping, that you stop saying, “I choose not reveal, because the culture war is so bad already [and so on and so forth]” when the truth is, you actually haven’t arrived at a conclusion.

A Follow Up on Prioritizing the Sending of Agencies

20140710_164402_Android

I received some good feedback on my sending of agencies post.

Wendy in the comments noted three agencies World Renew has launched.

  • Communities First
  • Partners Worldwide
  • Food Resource Bank

I was only familiar with the first.

Another commenter in another space (a closed group) gave a great list of other organizations the CRC has launched:

  • The Bible League,
  • Mission India,
  • Luke Society,
  • Bethany Christian Services,
  • Partners for Christian Development,
  • Eastern Ukraine Seminary,
  • Crossroad Bible Institute (40,000+ students in prison)
  • Christian Leaders Institute (training 10,000+ leaders in 160 countries)
  • Worldwide Christian Schools

and the list goes on. This is a natural thing for CRC folks to do.

The Dog Named Classis

The Dog Named Classis

The Dog Named Classis

Why the Mid-Level Structural Conversation We’re Not Able to Sustain is More Important for Local Fruitfulness than the Bi-National One

Viewing Structure From the Center

When we come to the structure conversation I think there is an implicit bias that asks the question “how can the distributed elements of the denomination help the center?” That isn’t to say that the center of the doesn’t care about the rim, it’s just an organizing bias.

The human body has a wonderful thing called “the circulatory system”. It is amazing to think of the fact that when I eat something the nutrients of what I consume are distributed to my body’s 37 TRILLION cells! These 37 trillion cells in the Apostle Paul’s illustration of “members” all contribute to my ability to act as one person uniting those cells in mission and purpose towards focused outcomes.

The CRC structure conversation needs to pursue three purposes of “structure”

  1. How can the diverse members of the united organism pursue mission together?
  2. How does the skeleton give strength and form for mission together?
  3. How does the circulatory system move nutrients and process information and signals throughout the system.

Hub and Distribution

Part of the challenge the CRC faces is the diversity of the communities it attempts not only to engage by to be informed by.

  1. Geographic Regional Culture: The US West is not like the US East or the US Midwest or the US South nor like the Canadian provinces.
  2. Ethnic Community: Majority Culture, Dutch-immigrant culture, Hispanic cultures, Asian cultures, African-American cultures, African-immigrant cultures, Eastern European cultures, etc.
  3. Age-based demographic cultures: Millenials, Xers, Boomers, Builders
  4. Christian tribal cultures: Old school Reformed, young and Reformed, Evangelical, Roman Catholic, African-American church culture,
  5. Wealth-status cultures: wealthy, poor, dependent, independent
  6. Red state, blue state, Canadian liberal and conservative
  7. Gender conversations
  8. Theological diversity

CRC systems have to be informed by, engaged with, sensitive to, in dialogue with many if not all of these different cultural systems.

The CRC and the RCA have a variety of current structures and mechanism for engaging this diversity.

Sculpting our Tents in the Age of Decay for the Hope of Imperishable Glory

Then and Now

Body Image Isn’t Just for Women Anymore

Men’s Journal recently did a piece on what Hollywood leading men need to go through to make the cut.

Brando never did crunches. Al Pacino didn’t slurp protein shakes. Cary Grant had never even heard of burpees, BOSU balls, or human growth hormone. But not one of today’s leading men can afford the luxury of a gym-free life. You simply don’t get your name on a movie poster these days unless you’ve got a superhero’s physique – primed for high-def close-ups and global market appeal. Getting there takes effort, vigilance, and the dedication of the elite athlete: high-intensity training, strict diets, supplements, and hormone replacement. If that fails, there are always drugs. Today’s actors spend more time in the gym than they do rehearsing, more time with their trainers than with their directors.

Since 5 percent body fat is nobody’s natural condition, fitness plans are geared to peak on the days of the sex scenes or shirtless moments. To prep for these days, trainers will dehydrate a client like a boxing manager sweats a fighter down to weight. They often switch him to a low- or no-sodium diet three or four days in advance, fade out the carbohydrates, brew up diuretics like herbal teas, and then push cardio to sweat out water – all to accentuate muscle definition for the key scenes.

No Pain No Gain

We all understand that if you want to achieve, you need to strive, but strive we often don’t. Why not? Isn’t it logical?

When you visit your doctor you will probably be told to eat less sugar and fat and exercise more. What do we call this? “sacrifice”.

Our bodies, and the world, are not what they “should” be and “sacrifice” is supposed to make up the difference.

Sacrifice, Then and Now

Isn’t it strange that this word has persisted as it has, or maybe it isn’t strange, but apt.

Various forms of sacrifice are nearly universal to human civilizations. In most cases there was a belief that humanity is somehow in debt to the gods, or in trouble with the gods and sacrifice will either placate the gods, pay our debt to the gods or keep the universe functioning.

There is a strange sort of parallel here. The ancients believed that sacrifice was necessary to keep the universe functioning, we believe that sacrifice is necessary to keep our bodies and our lives functioning.

What If The CRC Prioritized Becoming a Sender of Ministry Agencies?

Herb Van Denend at DawnTreader Christian School

It is more blessed to give than to receive

What if the Christian Reformed Church (CRC) is approaching its structural questions all wrong from a motivational perspective? What if instead of trying to employ our board assets to rejuvenate the organism below (or if you like the tree metaphor to use the branches to feed the roots) it decided that the path to its own rejuvenation was giving itself away in a more radical way.

While the CRC sometimes struggles with some of the individualistic methods common among evangelicals our strength seems to be in institution building and development.
